When God Sends You Through the Storm

Joseph's Story/My Story

You know that moment when your GPS confidently tells you to turn left, and you end up in someone's driveway? Then it says in that calm, slightly judgmental voice: "Recalculating." We've all been there, right? Following directions that seemed to lead us absolutely nowhere useful.  Life can feel like that sometimes. We think we're on the right path, doing everything we're supposed to do, and then—BAM—we end up in a pit. Literally, in Joseph's case. And unlike our GPS, God doesn't immediately announce, "Recalculating. Your new route will save an entire nation." No, He often stays silent while we wonder if we made a wrong turn somewhere.

But what if I told you that sometimes God isn't recalculating at all? What if the detour IS the route? What if the pit, the prison, and the pain are all part of the plan?

Let me read Genesis 45:5 from the New King James Version. This is Joseph speaking to the very brothers who betrayed him, sold him into slavery, and left him for dead:  "But now, do not therefore be grieved or angry with yourselves because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life."  Read that again slowly. "God sent me." Not "you ruined my life." Not "you destroyed my dreams." But "God sent me."  This is one of the most powerful statements of faith and perspective in all of Scripture. Joseph, after thirteen years of suffering—betrayal, slavery, false accusation, imprisonment—looks back and sees not the cruelty of his brothers, but the sovereignty of God.

Let's be honest about Joseph's journey. This wasn't a minor inconvenience. This was a catastrophic derailment of everything he thought his life would be.

He was seventeen years old, his father's favorite, wearing that famous coat of many colors. He had dreams—literal dreams from God—showing him that he would be great, that even his family would bow before him. The future looked bright.  Then his brothers threw him in a pit. They sold him to slave traders for twenty pieces of silver—the price of a slave. He was taken to Egypt, a foreign land where he didn't speak the language, didn't know the customs, and had absolutely no rights.

In Potiphar’s House He was falsely accused. Then in prison he was forgotten about, so I’m sure the questions may have haunted Joseph during those long nights? "God, where are You? What happened to those dreams You gave me? Was I wrong to believe You had a plan for my life? Did my brothers win? Did evil triumph?" Thirteen years of wondering if God had forgotten him. Thirteen years of pain without explanation. Thirteen years of waiting without answers.

But one day Joseph was brought before Pharaoh, interpreted his dreams, and was elevated from prisoner to prime minister in a single afternoon.

Because Joseph remained faithful through it all!

And Those incredible words: "God sent me before you to preserve life” echoed!

The pit wasn't punishment—it was positioning.

The slavery wasn't setback—it was preparation.

The prison wasn't abandonment—it was appointment.

Every painful step was God moving Joseph into place to save not just his family, but entire nations from starvation.

Here's the truth: we rarely see the purpose while we're in the pain.  Joseph didn't know in the pit that he was being positioned. He didn't know in Potiphar's house that he was learning administration. He didn't know in prison that he was developing the gift of dream interpretation that would save nations. He just knew it hurt.

You're asking the same questions Joseph must have asked: "God, where are You? Why is this happening? What possible purpose could this serve?"  Here's what I want you to hear today: God hasn't forgotten you. Your pain isn't pointless. Your detour isn't a mistake. God is positioning you, preparing you, and working out a purpose that you can't see yet.  The same God who sent Joseph through slavery and prison to save nations is the same God who is with you in your struggle. He hasn't lost control. He hasn't been surprised by your circumstances. And He is absolutely able to bring purpose out of your pain.
