The Story of Job: Lessons in Faith and Resilience

Reflections on Perseverance Through Trials

I recently read the story of Job in the Bible, and my goodness—if anyone ever comes into my office and claims they feel even a fraction like Job, I might just have to laugh them all the way out the front doors of the church. (Now, anyone who knows me knows I would never actually do this!) But honestly, Job went through more than most of us can ever imagine.

Job had a very good life. He was wealthy, had a large family, and loved and obeyed the Lord. The Bible says he was the richest man in the region. What a heartwarming story—he had the big house with the white picket fence, a family that loved him, lacked nothing, and life was good! That is, until one day, the devil was wandering back and forth, watching and gathering information for his next move, and he went to discuss Job’s situation with the Lord.

We know that the enemy of our souls—the devil—cannot do anything unless he has permission from the Lord Almighty. God asks him if he has considered His servant Job. I love the devil’s response (this is found in the translation according to Pastor Doug): “Of course I’ve considered him, but you have him guarded like Fort Knox. There are walls around his possessions, walls around his family and loved ones, walls all around his health. I can’t get to him; he’s so protected by you.”

Oh, people of God! Now more than ever, we need to be praying these walls of protection around our loved ones and family members. We need to pray for God’s protection over our health and our finances. We live in a world run by the devil, and he is seeking whom he can devour and destroy. But God is our fortress, our wall of protection from the enemy! Maybe you don’t get it now, but one day you will! 😊

Back to the devil—during these moments, I think he was accusing the Lord of buying Job’s allegiance and obedience. He made it seem like God gave Job all these riches just so he would love Him. Now, the Bible doesn’t say this outright, but it sure feels that way to me. So God gives the devil permission to prove that Job’s obedience and love are not just superficial.

Long story short: Job ends up sitting in the ashes of what once was his wealth and life, covered in open sores and boils, lamenting the loss of everything. He even laments the day his mother’s womb opened up to give birth to him. This pain runs deep, folks. But through it all, he doesn’t take the advice of his wife. He doesn’t curse God and die. Instead, he remains faithful and does not sin against God. Job’s love runs deep, and it is proven throughout his trials.

In the end, it’s like a country music song played backward—Job gets everything restored to him, plus more. His fortunes return, he receives a new home, and his new family is blessed again. But the one thing that never changed was his obedience and love for the Lord.

Can you say today that, no matter what happens around you or to you—even if your happiness is affected—your joy still rests in the Lord God Almighty, and you place your trust in Him? Even if everything is taken from you, will you remain steadfast in the truth that God is still in control of your destiny and still loves you?
